To hike 20+ miles everyday with substantial packweight is like running a daily marathon they say. The required effort is enormous. When this daily progress is shown on a map of the entire trail it seems as if youve traveled nowhere. Its almost like trying to fill a bucket with sand one grain at a time. To focus on completing this trip as a whole is the quickest way to drive yourself off the trail. This can be a crushing mental burden. To make progress, you are almost forced to live in the now and focus on each day, each hour, each moment. Some might say that this would become very monotonous. Actually, the beauty of it is that you quickly realize what you may have been missing by looking to far ahead. TOTAL MILES TRAVELED AS OF 9/20/99: 2,650 Mission complete! |
